Even though it’s chilly outside, plenty of avid boaters are still eager to get out on the water. Whether you’re decking out your boat in lights to cruise around for the holidays or going on a fishing trip with your friends, it’s important to be prepared for boating in cold weather. The temperatures out on the water, especially the open ocean, will be much colder than on land, so here are the essential pieces of boating gear you’ll need for cold weather.

Layered Clothing

First off, it’s a great idea to layer up your clothing so that you can stay well-insulated against the wind. Thermal underwear or leggings and a long-sleeved shirt beneath pants and a sweater, topped off with a fleece pullover and your coat, will keep you much warmer than a sweatshirt and jeans alone. Also, think about your extremities: a snug wool knit hat, a cozy scarf, insulated gloves, and thick wool socks are going to keep you warmer, too.

Dry Suit

If you’re boating in choppy waters, it’s easy to get wet, and you’re going to catch hypothermia if you’re both wet and cold outside for too long. Wearing a dry suit can really insulate you and protect you from every drop of water.

Flotation Coat

You should always wear some kind of personal flotation device (PFD, also known as a life jacket) when you’re on your boat. If you want to upgrade, however, to something more insulating, you can invest in a flotation coat that will keep you afloat if you fall in the water. The added bonus is that it will also insulate you well while you’re on your boat.

Food & Water

Make sure you’ve also brought plenty of snacks for you and your crew so that you don’t get hungry. Your body needs more calories to stay warm in the cold, so add some high-fat, high-protein options like cheese and nuts to your cooler. Fill up some thermoses with hot soup, cocoa, tea, or coffee, and bring some water as well to keep yourself hydrated.
