Protecting Yourself From the Sun On Your Boat

Taking your boat out on the water on a sunny day is a great way to relax, but you don’t want to pull up to the dock with pink and peeling skin from a horrible sunburn. You’re very exposed to the sun when you’re out in the middle of a lake or boating off the coast, so it’s especially important to keep yourself protected from ultraviolet rays with these strategies.

1. Put a Hat On

Trying to apply sunscreen to the top of your head will make your hair a miserable mess unless you’re bald (in that case, your job is easy). Putting on a hat is a simple way to protect your scalp, ears, neck, and face from the sun, while also improving your vision by reducing glare.

2. Lather Up With Sunscreen

A high-SPF water-resistant sunscreen is a must for any boater. Apply it 30 minutes before you go out into the sun to all exposed skin, and reapply as instructed by the directions. SPF lip balm is another good product to use to protect your lips.

3. Keep Covered

Lightweight linen or cotton garments can keep you cool in hot weather while doing double-duty as sun shields. Long pants and long sleeves can protect your skin from harmful UV rays. In fact, not exposing your skin to the sun can make you feel cooler.
